Flu Season and Natural Antibiotics

Flu Season and Natural Antibiotics

[TheChamp-Sharing]

Oh, the dreaded flu season.  I can honestly say that I was not a sickly child mostly thanks to my stepmother who was a stickler for healthy eating.  I’ve had the flu maybe two or three times in my entire life and the most recent time I had actually gotten a flu shot that year!  Well after that you can imagine I haven’t had a flu shot since.

Is this to say you shouldn’t get flu shots?  No, by all means get them if they work for you but so far I have been doing just fine without them.  Typically, during flu season I recommend to my clients that they increase their intake of vitamin C and zinc and as for women, make sure that they are building their blood to prevent illness.  However, there are some other natural things that can be utilized along with proper nutrition to help keep the flu at bay.

Listed below are sources known for having natural antibiotic properties.  Incorporating these into your daily routine may help to prevent or lessen the severity of illnesses like the flu and the common cold.

garlic

Garlic

Garlic as well as its close cousin, onion, contain natural antibiotic properties due to their sulfur content.  They are excellent for treating/preventing illnesses such as the common cold and flu.  So try cooking with fresh garlic or putting a small garlic clove in the bottom of your tea when you become ill.

honey

Honey

Honey contain antimicrobial enzymes that are excellent for preventing the growth of certain bacteria.  It is also considered a prebiotic because it aids in helping good bacteria thrive in the stomach.  Instead of sugar in your coffee and teas try using honey.  It also works as an excellent condiment for toast. You can also add cinnamon which makes for another excellent natural antibiotic.

Echinacea

This beautiful flower has been known to have powerful antifugal and antibacterial properties.  Typically used in teas (Yogi Echinacea Immune Support) you can find these also in cough drops (Ricola) and in capsule form as a supplement in your local grocery or Walmart/Target.

***Don’t forget about probiotics! Any member of this site knows how important probiotics are and how important they are to your digestive and immune health.  Be sure you are getting them during flu season and also if you have been taking any pharmaceutical antibiotics.
